ABOUT US

Shanballymore Apiary is a small but expanding apiary situated in North East Galway in a rural setting. Here we focus only on the promotion and wellbeing of the native Irish black bee (Apis mellifera mellifera). All Bees and indeed pollinators are important to the health of this planet it’s just we believe passionately about the promotion and hence growth in numbers of the black bee here in Ireland.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

To help both new beekeepers and experienced we have also set up this new online store selling beekeeping equipment to provide more choice here in Ireland especially since brexit. To support beekeeping and hence the growth in bee colonies we keep the cost of the equipment as low as possible with no compromise on quality. We also offer new beekeepers the opportunity of selling small amounts of honey through our store should they ever produce more than they require. We would like people to experience the diversity and quality of Irish honey from Multiple beekeepers within a single store.

Why Keep Bees

IF YOU LIKE THRIVING GARDENS, BIODIVERSITY, NATURE, AND HELPING THE COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT

As you’ve no doubt heard and read, pollinators are experiencing unprecedented decline. The reasons why are many, but interest in backyard, rooftop, and hobby beekeeping is growing because of it. One way to provide garden and community pollination is by keeping honeybees. In addition to interacting with these amazing creatures and fostering these pivotal pollinators, hive by-products are a major bonus to keeping bees.

KEEPING BEES CAN BE A DEEPLY SATISFYING HOBBY.

Honey, when conservatively and responsibly harvested, will leave enough stores for the bees to survive on through the winter, while giving your family a good amount for eating and cooking or your Artisan business enough honey to sell. Additionally, wax can be harvested for candles, balms, and other body products.

However, it is not just the harvesting of honey that makes beekeeping so enjoyable and satisfying although there is no better honey than your own. It is also the feeling of being part of nature.

KEEPING BEES CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

The better the quality of honey your bees create the healthier it will be for you. Honey contains important antioxidants which reduce the risks of certain diseases such as cancer,

diabetes and heart disease. Some studies have also claimed it can reduce cholesterol levels. It is also believed by many beekeepers that looking after bees is therapeutic and reduces stress by engaging with nature at this level. Many see the gentle soothing hum created by the bees as creating a meditative and relaxing mood helping the stresses of the day melt way

KEEPING BEES CAN YOU MAKE YOU HAPPY

Whilst happiness may be a more tenuously linked outcome from beekeeping it has always been accepted that contributing to something good makes us fundamentally happy.

As a beekeeper, no matter how small your apiary, you are definitely contributing to the bigger picture of our global environment. The dramatic decrease in the population of wild honeybees can be counteracted by in increase in managed bee colonies. So even a single back garden beehive contributes to our environment and gives us a sense of fulfilment knowing the contribution we are making.Make your bees happy and they will make you happy as well as provide hours of positive activity
